Sunday worship. Welcome Dr. Sasha Kondrashov.
We will have in-person worship and broadcast live on the Kamloops United Church YouTube channel: Worship – Sunday March 20, 2022 The service will be archived and can be listened anytime after that.
This Sunday is the third Sunday of Lent, the weeks before Easter when Christians have traditionally engaged in a period of self-examination. Our theme for worship is “Prayer for Ukraine”. We will be joined in worship by Dr. Oleksandr (Sasha) Kondrashov* who is working with Ukrainian settlement in Kamloops.
Dr. Oleksandr (Sasha) Kondrashov is Associate Professor, School of Social Work and Human Service with the Faculty of Education and Social Work at Thompson Rivers University.
He was born and raised in Lviv, Ukraine. He received his Bachelor of Social Work and Masters of Education degrees from the Lviv National Polytechnic University. At the University of Manitoba, he completed a Masters of Social Work. His thesis was entitled, “An exploratory study of the fourth wave of Ukrainian immigration in Winnipeg.” He completed his PhD at the University of Manitoba and created a model for an effective learning environment in social work distance education.
Currently Sasha is working with settling Ukrainians in Kamloops and has been responsible for organizing the rallies each Saturday at City Hall.
The Scripture passage for this Sunday seeks to answer the question of why bad things happen to good people. Jesus has an interesting answer. The contemporary interpretation is entitled: “What are you Asking?”
The service will be led by Dr. Caveney with music led by Tomas Bijok. The Harmony in Hand handbell choir will be playing three pieces: “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” and with the Kamloops United Bells of Note Choir: “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God” and “Dona Nobis Pacem.”For those who are at home, please join us for the online Zoom Coffee Hour: Click Here. For those attending worship at KUC, Join us this Sunday after the service for coffee in-person!!! This is our first in-person Coffee Hour since Covid. It will be from 11-12 PM in the church hall. We are preparing to assist persons arriving in Kamloops from Ukraine.
We have been in conversation Kamloops Immigration Services to see how we can be of support. Dr. Caveney is part of the community group working with them.
We are being asked to collect laptops, notebooks and cell phones that you are no longer using. Please drop them off at the church office. They will be refurbished and by KIS.
Note: At the moment RAFT (Refugees and Friends Together) is looking to sponsor a refugee family from elsewhere and is not involved with Ukrainian settlement.
