Minister’s Notes
I love watching the trees change colour in the fall. In Kamloops, the change of colour is so much more pronounced than the Coast where I lived for nearly twenty years. Each day, I notice that a few trees have begun that annual transformation before they shed their leaves entirely.
Have you noticed how each season of the year seems to have its own energy? All of nature cycles through birth, transformation and death…and we are a part of nature and that process. As summer changes into fall, natures prepares to shed what it no longer needs.
As I see the leaves fall, I wonder if there are some things in my life that I might need to shed? Are their feelings and emotions or grudges that I need to let go of? Are there habits that I could lay aside? Or are there material possessions that I could do without? (It is an excellent time to clean out those cupboards and make a trip to the Thrift Shop with your excess stuff.).
Then we hit winter. The trees are dormant. The ground freezes. The snow falls. Even in this season, there is energy…it is the energy preparing for spring. The hibernation and incubation of what will be renewed in the spring. Nature’s energy changing form.
In the fall, we prune our grape vines and cut back rosebushes so that they might flourish once again in the spring. I am always amazed at how radical pruning can seem. I wonder if the vine or bush will ever live again…and then as the days grow warmer and the sun stronger…there is life, more abundant life! Perhaps fall is a the time to do a little pruning in my own life?
Blessings,
Michael
