Council Connections: Jan., 2021
January 2021
Your Council Circle met, via Zoom, on Tuesday, January 19th and the discussions reflected much of the hope and positive expectations for the coming year.
Sandy Baird, Chair of Worship and Music, did a presentation to Council and reported on how well they have adapted and worked with our Ministry team in bringing the best of KUC into worship. They have been inspired and helped by a course through Dr Marcia McFee called “Reboot Your Worship” in a time of social distancing and pandemic. I believe we have all seen the positive results from this work!
Although there was significant time spent on issues of governance, budget and management, much of the meeting time was also spent on rediscovering our desire to develop a new vision for Kamloops United Church. As you may recall, we were in the middle of this process last Spring when the Covid pandemic struck. We are hesitant to go too far down this path at the moment with not being in the church building, but also recognize the need to start thinking, again, about who we are. Things have changed a lot since this time last year and new opportunities have presented themselves. For example, we have a new Music Coordinator, Tomas, and a new Spiritual Coordinator, Dan, who have brought forward new and exciting ideas. We find that we are actually thriving in the virtual world of on-line services. Evidence of YouTube views of 300 + from all over the country are now the “norm”. There is much to be thankful for! Please take a moment to have some prayerful thinking about what we could be like when we return. Are there things that should end at KUC? Are there things we should do more of? We will look forward to hearing from you over the next number of months.
With a view to the management of the business of the church, dates have been set for the Financial meeting (February 21 at 11:00 am via Zoom) and for the Annual General Meeting (May 30 at 11:00 am via Zoom). We will be sending our reminders as the days approach.
In addition, Council Circle has appointed representatives to work with RAFT on formalizing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two boards. Our desire is to be as supportive of the work of RAFT as possible, while also ensuring clarity on legal liabilities. We know that there is a desire from both parties to make this happen.
Council Circle makes a point of taking time to hear what is happening in and around the church. It is our great privilege to be in this role, and we are always happy to hear from the congregation on what is going well and what needs improvement.
As always, our meetings are busy and full! If there are any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Michael, Florence or myself. We’d be pleased to help in any way.
Blessings,
Marcia
