This morning’s reading from the Gospel of Luke requires us to pause and consider the scene before we begin interpreting the story. We read, “Just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight.” Try to look at the story for what it is. Don’t let yourself be distracted by traditional views that say this story is about the conflict between Jesus and the priests over healing on the Sabbath. Look at this woman. Who is she? I think this story is about the woman, her meeting Jesus, her healing and being restored to new life. The story is about liberation from bondage. Who is this woman? Is she also my neighbour? Might she even be us, the ones hearing the story?
