Dear Camp Grafton Registrants,
The last months have been an exceptional period in our history. They have brought rapid changes, including challenging our ways of being with each other. The Camp Grafton Society has been watching developments with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic carefully, waiting for enough information to make an informed decision about the summer plans for the 2020 camp season. We are so sorry to have to tell you that Camp Grafton has been cancelled for the summer of 2020.
The Board of Directors did not come to this decision lightly. Currently there are strong recommendations from the Provincial Health Officer regarding physical distancing. In addition to these recommendations, we also acknowledge that we have a responsibility to maintain the highest standard of safety within camp programming. This includes hiring and training staff, maintaining supply lines to a rural/remote location, and ensuring that the camp itself is maintained. Each of these areas have been affected by the current global pandemic. We also respect that running camp could increase the risk of spread in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, where our camp is located.
We know this decision touches so many lives in the Grafton family, from volunteers to campers, parents and families. For the time being, we will find other ways to stay connected and keep camp in our hearts during the months to come until we can be together again. Please stay in touch and check the Camp Grafton website and Facebook page for information and updates. The leaders love the campers so much and would love to be in touch with the kids in some fashion. Plans are already underway for some “virtual camp” activities that could happen.
If you have already paid for your child’s registration and need a refund, that can be arranged via Paypal or cheque, depending how you paid. Some cheques were not deposited yet when this decision was made. Our registrar, Giorsa Campbell, will be in touch with you. If needed, you can email her directly with your information at: email@example.com.
Those who are able may wish to donate the amount of their child’s registration to the Camp Grafton Society to help mitigate the damage from this year’s loss. As you probably know Camp Grafton is a not-for-profit society which relies on donations and fundraising to operate. If you do choose to make a donation, thank you very much; please let the registrar know and we will issue a tax receipt as soon as possible.
The Spirit of love and joy that is found at Camp Grafton is alive and well; the community that gathers at camp can still carry that magic in their memories and hearts until we can gather there again.
The Camp Grafton Board of Directors
From Kamloops United Church: Our hearts are with the CGS Board of Directors and the leaders and campers who had hoped to be at their favourite and much loved camp this summer. This has been a tough and courageous decision, but a necessary one, taken by the Grafton Society Board. Our hearts and prayers are with you all.
