KUC has been blessed with choral and instrumental music throughout its history. For most of its life, the original church had a pipe organ and a piano available to support the choir and services. Gordon Britton was organist/choir director in 1964-65; Gail Ovington was organist and choir director in the 1970’s; and Marg Waldon was organist/pianist/choir director for some 30 years thereafter. These three people are pipe organ trained and professional organists. They are still providing their music today.
In 1980 when the new sanctuary replaced the church building, many people insisted that it be equipped with an organ. Funds were raised, and the Baldwin organ which we have used for some 38 years was purchased. That instrument served us well for about 35 years, but then its life ended earlier this year and it has been discarded. Its age rendered it valueless actually, so it has been disposed of.
A group of musicians began discussing and researching a suitable replacement organ for KUC. The conclusion of their studies is now in the KUC Sanctuary available for us to hear and consider.
This Allen CF-17DK is the very model which we would recommend should KUC decide to continue to have an organ into the future. Fortunately, Thompson Organ Sales, of Springbank, Alberta, and Mr. Brian Thompson, the owner, is the Allen Organ Representative for Western Canada. He had this instrument in his showroom, and thus, available for our temporary use immediately.
It has the features we believe necessary to future KUC and community use. It features: two keyboards, full AGO pedalboard, drawknob registration/tone choice, and electronic features only an Allen and modern digitized eletronic organs can provide. It is an instrument capable of any and all uses possible, including teaching/training keyboardists to extend the numbers of organists available, pop music sounds (theatre organ), use by community musical groups, and recitals, and, of course, support for the KUC choir and worship services.
The Baldwin organ gave us some 35 years of use; we believe this Allen organ would give as many years of good use, if not more, and with a much superior sound and range of capabilities. The organ and fine Yamaha grand piano will continue to provide fine music and accompaniment to our musical life for many years to come.
