Two groups of Spirituality through Scripture sessions will be available during Lent, both facilitated by Chuck Anderson. These sessions are open to anyone who is interested; no prior biblical knowledge necessary. They will be based on the Lenten Challenge resource for 2017, which uses the Gospel according to John for the daily readings.
Each group will meet for eight sessions in the KUC Lounge. One will meet on Mondays from 7:00-9:00 p.m., from February 27 to April 10, with the eighth session meeting on Tuesday evening April 18th (the church will be closed on Easter Monday). The other group will meet on Wednesdays, March 1 to April 19, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
The first of the eight sessions will be on the introductions to the Lenten Challenge and to the Gospel according to John. The focus will be on two topics: first, the concept and practice of discipleship including the revised six marks of discipleship advanced by the authors of the Lenten Challenge; second, the special character of the Gospel according to John as compared with the other three Gospels. The following seven sessions will concentrate on the issues introduced in the daily readings of the previous week and the commentary in the booklet. Participants will be encouraged to share their own responses to the readings and commentary, and to raise questions and other concerns which may occur to them.
To allow maximum freedom for participation, each group will be limited to 15 participants. Register through the church office.
Each participant will need to have their own copy of the Lenten Challenge booklet ($10; financial assistance for those who request it). The booklet will be available after the church service February 26 and at the first meeting.
Those interested should register as soon as possible as that will help us decide how many copies of the Lenten Challenge booklet to order. Those who would like to buy the booklet but do not wish to join a group should also contact the church office to order the booklet.
