On February 7, 2017, Moderator Jordan Cantwell wrote to the Hon. Chrystia Freeland, newly appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Citing a statement from United Church partner B’Tselem, The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, she raised Israeli Knesset legislation that retroactively legalizes illegal Jewish outposts built on privately owned Palestinian land. She urged the Canadian government to denounce the Knesset action as a violation of international law, specifically UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which says that the settlements in the Palestinian territory have “no legal validity.”
“The United Church of Canada believes…a just and negotiated end to the occupation on the basis of international law and UN resolutions is a necessary condition for peace,” she wrote.
The Moderator also requested a meeting to discuss Canadian efforts for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.” The Moderator wrote: “Together with partners in the region, United Church members across the country are ready to support the federal government in this task.”
