Refugee Sponsorship Public Info Meeting: Sept. 29
Kamloops United Church (already a refugee “Sponsorship Agreement Holder” with the national government) is holding an information meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 29 @ 7:00 pm @ Kamloops United Church.
During this meeting, the “KUC Refugee Resettlement Committee”, and R.A.F.T. (an acronym for “Refugees And Friends Together”, which is a blend of church and secular persons working together in support of refugees), will provide information on what is involved in refugee sponsorship and how to become involved. RAFT members look forward to providing opportunity for more people of Kamloops to work with refugee sponsorship.
Brief History:
About Raft – Refugees and Friends Together:
A refugee resettlement group began in the 1970’s through a collaborative effort of churches in Kamloops sponsoring families from Viet Nam, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Croatia and Bosnia. In the late 1990’s in order to respond to the need to sponsor refugees from Kosovo it evolved into a community refugee sponsoring group called RAFT – which stands for Refugees And Friends Together. In the following years we have sponsored families from Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Columbia, Iraq and Iran.
We have noticed over the past decade that while the number of refugees in the world has increased so have the many challenges and frustrating delays in refugee sponsorship in Canada. This is making it extremely hard for most of us to continue to sponsor refugees.
In light of the wide attention on the horrific refugee situation, we need community involvement to join in the support of refugee sponsorship with us in Kamloops.
To that end we are holding a refugee sponsorship information meeting to inform the public and recruit supporters.
