Tasty cooked rice samples were prepared for the KUC congregation for after church on Feb. 22, and containers of three kinds of heirloom, GMO-free, pesticide-free rice were sold by our Global and Community Action Group.
In 2012 and 2013, KUC’s Global and Community Action group hosted fund raising events to support workshops on quality control and the development of simple tools for indigenous fair trade rice farmers in northern Luzon, Phlippines.
Over 150 farmers, mostly women, benefited. Our support attracted local and national attention to their work and most importantly, their US distributor was able to convince Level Ground, located in Victoria, to market the rice in Canada.
KUC’s help was critical for the farmers to market their heirloom, GMO-free, pesticide-free rice in Canada and increase the profile of their struggle to preserve the World Heritage Rice Terraces and the over 300 varieties of heirloom rice.
