AN INVITATION FROM FAITH FORMATION:
With the KUC library now on the lower level and less accessible until Phase 2 is completed, Faith Formation hopes that those interested in spiritual reading are continuing to find books (and videos, DVD’s, etc.) of interest. To encourage such reading (and viewing), Faith Formation invites any one to share a brief review of a book under the heading … “WHAT I’M READING”. Dawne T. volunteered to be the first to do so.
WHAT I’M READING – The Age of the Spirit: (Dawne T.) I was intrigued by the live streaming of Phyllis Tickle’s Epiphany Exploration presentations, and particularly by her suggestion that we had the Age of the Father (Hebrew faith of Old Testament), the Age of the Son (Christian teaching and scriptures for past 2000 years), and that now we are entering, The Age of the Spirit.
She tied this into the general upheavals that the church seems to experience every 500 years or so – and the fact that we are in the midst of such an upheaval right now. So, I wanted to learn a little more.
The subtitle of her book, The Age of the Spirit, is How the Ghost of an Ancient Controversy is Shaping the Church. It’s a small book that takes us through the history of the Great Schism of the 11th century that saw the split between the Roman Catholic (Western) and Orthodox (Eastern) Churches. Basically that schism was about the role of the Spirit and whether the Spirit was equal to or less than Jesus. Tickle maintains that split in theology has dogged the Christian church for the past millennium, and is reflected in our creeds, liturgies, prayers and worship styles.
Now, in this 21st century, there is an emerging sense that the Spirit is blowing through the church again, bringing change, new life, hope and opportunities. We only have to remember the oft-repeated phrase “I’m spiritual but not religious” to think that Tickle might be on to something! As someone with a little knowledge of church history and theology, I found the book interesting and a fairly easy read. But I was disappointed that Tickle did not venture into that uncharted territory of how the Spirit might manifest in the coming years. The future remains unknown!!!
