Call to Worship (based on Psalm 148, Common English Bible translation)
Hallelujah! Praise God from heaven!
Praise God, sun and moon, you morning stars,
praise God from earth, you sea dragons, you fathomless ocean deeps;
Praise God, wild beasts and herds of cattle, snakes and birds in flight:
praise God, Earth’s kings and all races, leaders and important people,
praise God, robust men and women in their prime, and graybeards and little children!
Let us praise the name of God – the only Name worth praising,
praise from all who love God!
O God on this Sunday after Christmas we sense your arrival.
We trust that you have come to us once again as a vulnerable child and that you continue to be with us through your spirit. As we hear and sing your story from so long ago, help us to know that you are present with us now in so many ways. Open our hearts and minds to your mystery and majesty we pray. Amen.
Singing: Voices United # 48 ‘Hark! the Herald Angels Sing’
Prayer of Confession
O Creator God, during this holiday season it is easy to celebrate without remembering what the celebration is all about in the first place. Help us to contemplate the Christ child and his embodiment of the Kingdom of God. Forgive us for giving up on your dream: that justice will someday roll down like water and that your peaceable kingdom will prevail. Forgive us too when, like Herod, selfish ambition makes us willing to hurt others. Forgive us when, unlike Joseph, we refuse to follow the direction you offer to us. Grant us your grace, O God as we come before you today.
Sung Response: Voices United # 58 ‘Infant Holy, Infant Lowly’
An Assurance of God’s Love
In light, trust and grace, God surrounds us with a love that will not let us go. God calls each and every one of us by name. We are loved, forgiven and freed to be the people whom God calls us to be. Thanks be to God. Amen.
