Welcome to Worship at Kamloops United Church Christmas Eve Candlelight – December 24, 2013 – 7:00 P.M.
We Gather as People of God
An Outdoors Musical Welcome by the Folk of Note An Indoors Musical Prelude with the Bells of Note Words of Welcome Processional Carol # 62 ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ Call to Worship and Opening Prayer
Cold is the earth, stone cold; yet, cold in the earth is the seed, hidden, waiting for the warmth of spring to bring it alive. In a cold cattle stall, a baby stirs. A baby has been born for us. A child has been given to us and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, the Prince of Peace. Come, let us experience the mystery of this Holy evening. Let us pray:
Mysterious God, You come to us this season softly as a mother’s sigh, as startling as the cry of a newborn child. Come into our hearts, we pray, that we might be cradled in your love and stirred by your glory. We pray in the name of the Holy One whose coming we celebrate, Jesus Christ, the Bethlehem baby. Amen.
Lighting the Advent Candles and the Christ Candle
Our Advent time of waiting and watching is over. During the past four Sundays we have lit candles that remind us about waiting and watching in God’s hope, peace, joy and love. (Light the four Advent candles.)
These candles remind us that God promises to be with us. In God’s presence we can have faith in the future as we seek peace with justice. In God’s presence we can rejoice and live a life of love. These candles of hope, peace, joy and love remind us of God’s promise to be with us no matter what.
Tonight we light the last candle, the one in the centre of our wreath that we call the Christ candle.
(The Christ candle is lit.)
The Christ candle reminds us that God’s light and love come to us in the Christ child and continues to come to us through God’s Spirit here and now. Thanks be to God!
