A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who made a special donation to the Kamloops Indian Band to help with their feast and preparations around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Hearings, May 28 & 29. Kamloops United Church raised $320, along with $500 from Kamloops-Okanagan Presbytery, $300+ from Mt. Paul UC, and an unknown amount from Plura Hills UC.
Also, on site during the hearings were several KUC attendees there to hear the stories and support the commission and participants; and many KUC official volunteers, who helped set up and clean up; and who worked the refreshment booth for both days.
Kathy Hogman, the TRC Educator for BC Conference of the UCC, was present for both days of hearings, and she expressed her pleasure and amazement at the level of support and connections made over those two days. The hearings began with a statement from the acting chief, who made a point of thanking the United Church of Canada.
At the feast, Tuesday evening, again, Jo-Anne Gottfriedson, Coordinator of the event, thanked the United Churches of Kamloops, and the Anglican Church for sponsoring the feast. In Kathy Hogman’s words, “This never happens. For the Band to acknowledge the church in such a way is unheard of. Whatever you are doing here, keep it up.” Well done, Kamloops United Church for being a caring, generous, humble, helpful presence at the TRC Hearings. May the steps towards healing on all sides, continue.
