“The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, hearing stories and testimonies of residential school survivors, will be in Kamloops May 28 and 29. The TRC was commissioned by the Federal Government as part of the healing and reconciliation with aboriginals who attended residential schools operated by the various churches in Canada for close to 100 years. The hearings in Kamloops are open to the public – and members of KUC are encouraged to attend from 8 am to 4 pm each day.
As this is a sad and unjust chapter in our nation’s history, having the TRC hearings in Kamloops provides the opportunity for all of us to learn the truth about the schools, and the legacy we still bear.
In addition, Council Circle at KUC agreed to a special appeal from congregants to support the Tk’emlups Indian Band as they host survivors and provide a feast for them each evening after the hearings. Kamloops-Okanagan Presbytery has offered $500 on behalf of the entire Presbytery, but additional support from local churches would also help the TIB in hosting this event.
