The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Hearings, at the T’KIB gym. Kamloops United Church members are encouraged to attend each day for as long as you can, in support of those sharing their stories about their experiences at day and residential schools. The TRC was commissioned by the Federal Government as part of the healing and reconciliation process with First Nations people who attended residential schools operated by the various churches in Canada for close to 100 years. The hearings in Kamloops are open to the public. Attending offers support to those courageous enough to share their truth and feel heard. This is a sad and unjust chapter in our nation’s history and is a legacy we still bear. Registration forms are being requested for anyone planning to attend the hearings and the forms can be found on the front desk in the lobby.
May 26th we will be blessing the “Prayer Squares and Circles” created by our Prayer Shawl Ministry and their many helpers. These gifts of comfort and solidarity will be presented to each person who shares their story at the hearings, May 28-29. On this day, there will also be a special financial appeal to the congregation in support of the Tk’emlups Indian Band, so they may host a feast each day of the TRC Hearings. The special request for funds has been approved by Council Circle. Kamloops-Okanagan Presbytery has also offered $500 on behalf of the entire Presbytery, but additional support from local churches would also help the TIB in hosting this event. For more info, see poster on bulletin board. Please confirm attendance by June 1st so they will know how much food to prepare.
