The CaW group is passionate about creating opportunities for “community building” and extending a welcome to the church. Their goals are to promote hospitality and community within the church family and to encourage everyone to welcome newcomers to the congregation. It is likely these folk who will greet you at the doors on a Sunday morning, or be at the “Action Table” to share information about KUC with visitors and new-comers.
The group created a new welcome brochure this fall, and are also the ones who provide name tags. At the time of the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper (beginning of Lent, the season before Easter) the CaW folk invited newcomers to the supper, and enjoyed hosting them.
“CaW” members, Fliss Klassen and Sharon Rhodes, arranged for a “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” event, with 33 guests enjoying a delicious dinner at 5 host homes. A bonus was that the event generated $905 for the church.
This spring a new KUC Photo Directory was produced to help us get to know each other – to help us put names and faces together. In the pages titled “Faces of KUC” there about 345 faces of KUC folk (and family). There is also a page of staff photos, including a group photo of the KUC PreSchool & Out of School Care staff.
We made some changes in this Photo Directory. More and more families now have two surnames, so we have listed those families under each surname (so it is easier to locate them). Also, this Photo Directory has a roster at the back, with addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for those who wished to have that information included.
With the timing of our “Vision421″/Redevelpment of KUC, it seemed an opportune time to include some pictures of the building as it is (“was” in the case of the KUC Thrift Shop which has already relocated to 387 – 4th Avenue, across St. Paul Street from KUC), so this directory has more “building pictures”. (Since the foundations under the courtyard were checked before the Photo Directory went to publication, there are two pictures on the back cover of this event: one of the bobcat being lifted over the back entrance and hallway, into the courtyard, and another of the bobcat digging in the courtyard.) There are also both candid and posed photos of the recent activities and life of KUC.
A great many folk helped in the preparation of the directory, and we’re delighted so many folk chose to be included. A successful and appreciated community effort!
In the fall of 2010, the Community & Welcoming Core Ministry was very pleased to have new members join the group. Joan Aitken, Barrie Odgen, June Routledge and Merissa Trigg joined Fliss Klassen, Ruby MacLeod, Freda White, (chair) Sue Sewell and Rev. Teri Meyer.
The goals of “CaW”, (promoting hospitality and community within the church family, and encouraging everyone to welcome newcomers) interlock with the congregation’s Ministry Plan of “Growing the Congregation” by focussing on being a welcoming congregation.
