March 24, 2013 Update
KUC moved “back home” on Friday, March 1st. Since that time, there has been a flurry of activity as work-teams vacuumed, scrubbed, and cleaned the whole building, then other teams picked up and moved our “stuff” from the CE Centre back into new surroundings. Just finding out how to get around in the new space was a challenge for all of us! What a lot of work – but what a lot of cheerful, volunteer help! Special “thanks” goes to Don Waldon for orchestrating the cleaning and move components (and all the questions and concerns associated with that) and to Rose for organizing and overseeing the kitchen transformation.
Reverends Teri Meyer and Bruce Comrie moved into their temporary offices in the lower level. Sharon Huuhua has moved into the temporary administration office on the main level. Our volunteer receptionists have a new desk and can be found at the top of the main stairway.
The Preschool and PIT Stop are now operating from Phase I.
Meetings of all user groups have been held in the lower and upper levels.
Feb. 28, 2013 Update
Final inspections for an Operation Permit for the Lift, and a Building Occupancy Permit will be happening this coming week. This means that by week’s end, we should be in a position where Don Waldon can finalize plans and put into action our Move-In – knowing that the facility is ready for us. Folk – that is no easy task and one that will not be accomplished over-night. Please keep Don in your prayers as they prepare to lead us in this next major transition.
While that planning and moving is going on, Bruce and Teri along with Council Circle and Worship Committee will be looking at the optimum time for our First Service in our redeveloped facility. They will also be determining an appropriate time and method to say “farewell” to this CE Centre.
February 3, 2013 update
A New Year Starts…the vine grows.
Although the opening was held Jan. 24, not all facets of the building have been completed. A move-in date will not been announced until all approvals and permits have been received and construction finishing details are completed. But volunteers have been busy starting to re-pack and plan for different stages of the move.
Living in Transition
Once a location was designated to house many items during the transition period, from May to the re-opening date, user groups, committees and congregation members adapted to new entrances, temporary spaces, and new routines. Weekly worship services were conducted in the Fellowship Hall and PIT Stop continued to serve their clients. During this period, everyone was accommodating regarding sharing space and coping with some inconveniences.
At the beginning of January, different committees began preparing for the move to Phase I. Items are being repacked, locations for items designated and volunteers are being recruited for various work bees or moving items to the Sanctuary Building.
* * *
All areas of the sanctuary “end” of our building (including the thrift store, music room and tunnel) have been vacated.
The new Thrift Store location at 387 4th Ave and St Paul, lower level, has attracted new clientele. Many have commented on the quality of the goods sold and the natural light coming into the space.
The KUC Front Office and Volunteer’s Reception desk have moved to the Christian Education Centre (adjacent). The Sanctuary was moved on Easter Sunday as part of the service, and we are worshiping in the “Fellowship Hall” Sunday mornings.
An official “Hammer Blow” ceremony was held April 14th, celebrating the beginning of “Phase One” construction. Reconstruction has now begun!
